Scope and Contents

The collection consists almost entirely of correspondence related to the Nitz family, from the days when Gerhardt Nitz was a seminary student in and served in various ministries in St. Louis through his pastorates in Idaho, Alaska, and back to St. Louis. A few of his sermons and essays, along with biographical material, are also included. The letters give insights into his thoughts about his family and the progress of his ministry.

Biographical note:

The Rev. Dr. Gerhardt E. Nitz was born in Bellingham, Washington, the son of F.M.L. Nitz and his wife Caroline, in 1916 March 6. He graduated Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1938. He was ordained and installed as pastor of the Lutheran churches at Pocatello and Aberdeen, Idaho, in 1938 September 25. In 1943 Rev. Nitz was commissioned as a missionary-at-large for the Lutheran Church in the Alaska territory. In 1947 he accepted a call as pastor to Grace Lutheran Church, St. Louis, where he served the rest of his ministry. He served on various Boards, including the Board of Directors for The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, and as chairman of the Board for Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He served on the Television Committee of the Synod and as a radio speaker. Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1965. He married Wilma Kahm in 1939. He died in 1988 in St. Louis.
