Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters in German (mostly handwritten) from H. A. C. Paul to fellow pastors or to the District Mission Board. The letters have been transcribed into Latin characters and have been translated into English. Also included is brief biographical material.

Biographical note:
The Rev. Heinrich August Carl Paul was born in Kassel, Germany, in 1858. He emigrated to South Australia and then to the United States. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, in 1889 and was ordained at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Blooming (Cornelius), Oregon. He also served parishes in Sherwood, Oregon; Spokane, Washington; Endicott, Washington; Denham, Indiana; and Goodland, Indiana. For reasons of health, he moved to Hamburg, Germany, where he died one day later on 21 April, 1922.
He was the first president of the Oregon and Washington (now Northwest) District of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod from 1899-1902. He married Emilie Noack in 1881 in Kapunda, South Australia.
