Historical note

Evangelistic work was done from the early days of the Northwest District, mostly be individual pastors, congregations, and circuit riders employed by the District. In 1949 the District Mission Committee began a more formal programmatic approach through a series of 7 Evangelism Workshops at various places throughout the District.

By the mid 1950s, organized evangelism efforts were conducted in may parts of the Northwest District, encouraged and coordinated by a "District Evangelism Contact Man." Some programs were of local origin, others were adapted from programs suggested by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. To align these diverse and scattered evangelism efforts more closely with the District's total program, the 1961 District Convention made the Office of District Mission Man an advisory office to the District Missions Committee. An evangelism committee was soon formed. The Evangelism Committee held its final meeting on February 19, 1996, when a reorganization of the District made this function a department under Congregational Services.
