Northwest District (LCMS) Carl F. Nitz Papers
Scope and Contents
Most of the papers in the Carl F. Nitz collection consist of correspondence between Rev. Nitz and Pastors or officials in the District. Some of the letters are to family members, and some are copies of letters between other members of the family with each other. Included also are conference essays, sermons, and other writings. A folder of miscellaneous biographical items, including a few photographs, completes the collection.

The Northwest District Archives is the owner of the materials in the Carl F. Nitz Collection and makes available reproductions for research, publication, and other uses. Written permission must be obtained from the Northwest District Archives before any reproduction use. Copyright resides with the creator of the documents or their heirs. The status of copyright is governed by the Copyright Law of the U. S. (Title 17, U.S.C.). In some cases, permission for use may require seeking additional authorization from the copyright owners.
Biographical note
The Rev. Carl Frederick August Nitz was born in Bellingham, Washington, on December 22 in 1910, the son of F. M. L. Nitz and Caroline Nitz. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1933. In 1934 he was ordained and installed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, Idaho. From 1936-1941 he served as Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Shefflin (now Hillsboro), Oregon. From 1941-1943 he was Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 1943 he became Acadamic Dean, Recruitment Director, and Teacher at Concordia Academy, Portland, Oregon. From 1945-1956 he was Pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Parkrose, Oregon. From 1956-1972 he served as Counselor for Stewardship, Education, and Youth for the Northwest District of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. In 1972 he began serving as Pastor at Hope Lutheran Church, Woodburn, Oregon, until his retirement in 1977. For many years he volunteered his services as Archivist for the Northwest District. Because of his interest in printing and publishing, he printed most of the materials used in the District office while he was a Counselor for the District.
In 1933 he married Edna W. Hoefener.
He died 1992 August 11.
