Historical Note
At the request of the Mission Board of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Rev. Arthur L. Reinke, pastor of Our Savior Church for the Deaf in Chicago, made an exploratory trip to the west coast and held services in a number of cities. From that begining, several congregations were established. The majority of the members of these congregations were often deaf themselves as they ministered to deaf people in the community.
Prior to 1973, the Synod administered the deaf ministries program directly and provided any funding that was needed. In 1973 the Synod resolved to transfer the work among the deaf to the districts, and on July 1, 1974, the Northwest District assumed responsibility for work among the deaf within its boundaries through the Mission Committee.
In 1990 the Mission Committee of the District instituted a Deaf Advisory Committee to assist the Committee in the administration of the ministry to the deaf. The first meeting was held January 24, 1990.
When the Mission Committee was phased out in 1997, as a result of a reorganization of the Board of Directors, and its work assumed by Expanding Ministries, ministry to the deaf became a responsibility of Expanding Ministries.
